“You said… missiles?”

When Louis Sivillo joined us two weeks ago he brought one of the most interesting job histories of anyone we’ve came across, ranging from missiles to MATLAB.

After we interviewed him, our first question was something along the lines of “How can someone who spent…

New Optical Illusions - By Dan Guterman

A drawing of a rabbit with the long ears and the cute whiskers and everything else. But when you look at the drawing again the rabbit looks like a hare.

One where you see a young lady. But then a second later you see an old woman. And a second after that you see a third woman, in, like, her early thirties, and she’s going to law school, because that’s what she thinks she should be doing, even though she doesn’t really like it at all. Also, she’s two hundred thousand dollars in debt.

Something with a box. It’s been too long since there’s been a really good box optical illusion.

Two lines, where the first line looks longer than the second line. But when you take a ruler to measure them they’re actually the same length. Pretty standard illusion, right? Wrong. Because the ruler you used to measure the lines, it’s now a Snickers bar.

A trident. Only the trident doesn’t make any logical sense, because who do you think you are, Poseidon?

O.K., this one is a little more open-ended, but basically it’s an optical illusion where at first you don’t see it and get really frustrated and then, after several minutes of staring at it, you’re suddenly, like, “Whoa. Crazy.”

Two hands drawing each other. And the illusion is that at first it seems like a career in the arts is feasible, but then you stare at it for a bit longer and realize that, no, it’s really not.

One where you think you see a vase, but then you blink and now it’s two women. And then you blink again and it’s three women, only one of the women is shaped exactly like a vase.

Dyslexia.

A staircase, where no matter how long you follow it the staircase never seems to go any higher. Over and over again, you keep following this crazy staircase, until you’re just, like, “Man, is there an optical-illusion elevator I can take? This is ridiculous. I have a meeting I need to get to.”

A blue star. And how it works is you stare at the blue star for thirty seconds and then you look at a blank sheet of paper and what you see is that you just wasted another goddam minute of your stupid life.

One of those hypnosis spinning-wheel things. Doesn’t seem like that big a deal, does it? Then how come you’re suddenly clucking like a chicken?

That same girl from the law-school illusion. And here’s the thing: she is really, really pretty. And at first you don’t think you have a chance with her. I mean, look at her. She’s gorgeous. What would she want with a guy like you? But then, maybe because you’re nice to her, or maybe because you make her laugh, it seems like there’s a possibility that she likes you back. And then one night, a couple of months later, the two of you kiss, and it’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to you. But then—optical illusion!—she calls you the next day and says that the whole thing was a huge mistake and that she was drunk and that maybe it’d be best if the two of you didn’t hang out together anymore. This optical illusion is called Sarah. ♦

"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Instead of being replied to or even ignored, the company hit back with a brilliant spoof apology via a YouTube video.

Neill took to Bodyform’s Facebook page to register his upset at Bodyform’s ‘lies’ about a woman’s time of the month. He said he was angry that the feminine hygiene brand had “lied to us for all these years”.

“As a child I watched your advertisements with interest as to how at this wonderful time of the month that the female gets to enjoy so many things, I felt a little jealous.”

He remembered happy women bike riding and “blue water and wings” from the Bodyform adverts of the 80s and 90s.

Evil, as evil, can never be chosen; and though evil is often the effect of our own choice, yet we never desire it but under the appearance of an imaginary good.

Many things we indulge ourselves in may be considered by us as evils, and yet be desirable; but then they are only considered as evils in their effects and consequences, not as evils at present and attended with immediate misery.

Reason represents things to us not only as they are at present, but as they are in their whole nature and tendency; passion only regards them in their former light. When this governs us we are regardless of the future, and are only affected with the present. It is impossible ever to enjoy ourselves rightly if our conduct be not such as to preserve the harmony and order of our faculties and the original frame and constitution of our minds; all true happiness, as all that is truly beautiful, can only result from order.

Whilst there is a conflict betwixt the two principles of passion and reason, we must be miserable in proportion to the struggle, and when the victory is gained and reason so far subdued as seldom to trouble us with its remonstrances, the happiness we have then is not the happiness of our rational nature, but the happiness only of the inferior and sensual part of us, and consequently a very low and imperfect happiness to what the other would have afforded us.

If we reflect upon any one passion and disposition of mind abstract from virtue, we shall soon see the disconnexion between that and true, solid happiness. It is of the very essence, for instance, of envy to be uneasy and disquieted. Pride meets with provocations and disturbances upon almost every occasion. Covetousness is ever attended with solicitude and anxiety. Ambition has its disappointments to sour us, but never the good fortune to satisfy us; its appetite grows the keener by indulgence, and all we can gratify it with at present serves but the more to inflame its insatiable desires.

The passions, by being too much conversant with earthly objects, can never fix in us a proper composure and acquiescence of mind. Nothing but an indifference to the things of this world, an entire submission to the will of Providence here, and a well-grounded expectation of happiness hereafter, can give us a true satisfactory enjoyment of ourselves. Virtue is the best guard against the many unavoidable evils incident to us; nothing better alleviates the weight of the afflictions or gives a truer relish of the blessings of human life.

What is without us has not the least connexion with happiness only so far as the preservation of our lives and health depends upon it. Health of body, though so far necessary that we cannot be perfectly happy without it, is not sufficient to make us happy of itself. Happiness springs immediately from the mind; health is but to be considered as a condition or circumstance, without which this happiness cannot be tasted pure and unabated.

Virtue is the best preservative of health, as it prescribes temperance and such a regulation of our passions as is most conducive to the well-being of the animal economy, so that it is at the same time the only true happiness of the mind and the best means of preserving the health of the body.

If our desires are to the things of this world, they are never to be satisfied. If our great view is upon those of the next, the expectation of them is an infinitely higher satisfaction than the enjoyment of those of the present.

There is no happiness then but in a virtuous and self-approving conduct. Unless our actions will bear the test of our sober judgments and reflections upon them, they are not the actions and consequently not the happiness of a rational being.
”

- Ben Franklin

Photo

So proud of my man @CaseyCrescenzo and @therealTDH - The Dear...

So proud of my man @CaseyCrescenzo and @therealTDH - The Dear Hunter. Absolutely beautiful!

"Inspiration is for amateurs.
